Slaty-tailed Trogon
Scientific Name: Trogon massena
Large, red-bellied trogon of humid tropical lowlands. Favors rainforest interior, but also found at edges and around clearings, mainly perched quietly and in an upright position at middle to upper levels in larger trees. Lack of white band above the red belly and entirely dark gray undertail (or with a few fine white bars at the sides on immatures) separate Slaty-tailed from other red-bellied trogons. On males also note the stout orange bill and orange eyering. Digs its nest in arboreal termite nests.
The Slaty-tailed Trogon is a striking and serene presence in the rainforest canopy, often motionless for long periods as it scans for insects and fruit. Its deep, resonant call echoes through the forest, adding to the tropical symphony of sounds. Despite its bright red belly and orange accents, it blends surprisingly well into the shaded greens of the forest. During the breeding season, pairs work together to excavate nests in termite mounds high above the ground, demonstrating remarkable cooperation and devotion.
