Gray-headed Chachalaca
Scientific Name: Ortalis cinereiceps
Large chickenlike bird with long neck and tail. Overall brown with grayer head; note rufous wing feathers. Usually seen in small flocks crashing clumsily through the trees, typically at middle levels along forest edge or in second growth.
This lively bird is often heard before it is seen, especially when groups call loudly from the vegetation in the early morning or late afternoon. It feeds mainly on fruits, seeds, leaves, and small invertebrates, playing an important role in moving seeds through tropical habitats. Although it may appear awkward as it moves through branches, the Gray-headed Chachalaca is well adapted to disturbed forests, gardens, and wooded edges, where its social behavior and distinctive voice make it a familiar presence.
