Olive-backed Euphonia
Scientific Name: Euphonia gouldi
Very small finch of humid evergreen forest and forest edge in tropical lowlands. Usually found in pairs, loosely associating with other euphonias, especially when feeding in mistletoe or fruiting trees. Both sexes are bronzy green overall with a deep rusty vent (extending into a belly stripe on the male). The male shows a bright yellow forehead patch, while the female’s forehead is deep rusty.
The Olive-backed Euphonia moves actively through the canopy and mid-level vegetation, giving soft, high-pitched calls as it searches for small fruits. It plays an important ecological role by dispersing seeds of mistletoe and other plants throughout the forest. Though tiny, it can be surprisingly colorful when seen in good light. In Costa Rica’s lowland forests and gardens near wooded areas, patient observers may spot this energetic little bird hopping quickly between branches.
