Scientific Name: Amazona autumnalis

Fairly large, bright green parrot of humid tropical lowlands. Fairly common. Found in forest, edge, and semiopen areas with scattered tall trees and forest patches. Most often seen flying overhead early and late in the day, often fairly high and usually in pairs or loose groups made up of pairs. Best field mark is the contrasting yellow cheek patch; also note red forehead. Like other parrots in the same genus, in flight shows a red patch on the flight feathers.

Listen for their distinctive, rolling “ko-rAAH” call, often given in flight or while perched. While generally shy, they can sometimes be observed feeding on fruits, seeds, and nuts in the canopy. In Costa Rica, you’ll often encounter them in the lowlands of both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes, particularly in areas with remnant primary forest or mature secondary growth. Look for them around fruiting trees, especially early in the morning or late afternoon when they are most active.
