Palm Tanager
Scientific Name: Thraupis palmarum
Large, plain tanager, gray overall with hints of olive-green in good light; note contrasting black wings with paler patch at base of primaries. A habitat generalist often found around palm trees and in open shrubby areas, gardens, and forest edges. Usually in pairs or small flocks, sometimes with other species. Often quite noisy and conspicuous; gives a series of sputtering squeaks or a single nasal “swee?”
Highly adaptable and comfortable around human activity, this species is a familiar presence in both rural and urban environments across the tropics. It feeds on a varied diet of fruits, insects, and nectar, often moving methodically through trees and shrubs while foraging. Its social nature and frequent vocalizations make it easy to notice, even if its subtle coloration helps it blend into the foliage. Palm Tanagers often join mixed-species flocks, contributing to the lively movement and sound typical of tropical garden and forest-edge birdlife.
