Orange-chinned Parakeet

Scientific Name: Brotogeris jugularis

Small, fast-flying parakeet of humid lowlands; restricted to the Pacific slope in the northern parts of its range. Favors forest patches and fairly open country with hedges and tall trees, including towns and villages. Usually seen in pairs or small flocks; associates readily at fruiting and flowering trees with much larger and longer-tailed Orange-fronted Parakeet. Flight is distinctively bounding, not direct like larger parakeets. Plumage is green overall with bronzy shoulders; small orange chin patch is very hard to see.

Its vocalizations are equally subtle, often consisting of high-pitched, thin squeaks and chattering calls that can be easily lost amidst the cacophony of the tropical forest. When perched, it frequently engages in rapid preening and social interactions within its small group, displaying a nervous energy. The Orange-chinned Parakeet’s diet primarily consists of seeds, fruits, and flowers, and its agile movements allow it to navigate the intricate branches of flowering trees with ease. Despite its relatively wide distribution, habitat loss and fragmentation pose ongoing threats to its populations, highlighting the importance of conserving the remaining patches of suitable forest and semi-open landscapes.
