Olive-throated Parakeet

Scientific Name: Eupsittula nana

Parakeets are fairly small parrots, usually with a relatively long and somewhat pointed tail. This species is fairly common in tropical lowlands, mainly in semi-open areas with scattered trees, woodland, locally in towns and suburban areas. Often in small flocks, also in pairs. Note the dirty brownish cast to the breast, and the whitish eyering. In most parts of its range, no other parakeets occur.

However, in regions where their range overlaps with other parakeet species, careful observation of subtle plumage details and vocalizations becomes crucial for accurate identification. Their calls, often a series of sharp, high-pitched screeches or chattering sounds, can be a reliable indicator, especially when coupled with the characteristic flight pattern – swift and direct, punctuated by rapid wingbeats. These parakeets are adaptable foragers, feeding on a variety of seeds, fruits, and blossoms, and their presence can often be detected by the scattered remnants of their meals beneath fruiting trees.
