Great Tinamou
Scientific Name: Tinamus major
Large, almost tailless game bird that lives on the ground in humid tropical lowlands. Hunted for food and thus has been wiped out from many areas. Rarely seen, but its haunting two-part whistled song can be heard, especially early and late in the day and even at night. Sometimes flushes explosively from close range, crashing off through the forest understory. Plumage rather plain overall, warm brown above and grayish below, with grayish (not reddish) legs.
Despite its secretive nature, the Great Tinamou plays an important ecological role in tropical forests by dispersing seeds as it feeds on fallen fruits, insects, and small invertebrates. It prefers dense rainforest with thick leaf litter where it can remain well camouflaged. When walking, it moves quietly and deliberately, blending perfectly with the forest floor. Its distinctive, mournful whistle is often the only sign of its presence, making it a prized but challenging species for birdwatchers exploring Costa Rica’s lowland forests.
