Mealy Amazon
Scientific Name: Amazona farinosa
Large, bright green parrot of humid evergreen forest in tropical lowlands. Uncommon. Found in rainforest and adjacent clearings, not in open habitats. Most often seen flying overhead early and late in the day, usually in pairs. Best field mark is the big pale eyering on a fairly plain head; with a good view, the bluish crown can be seen. Like other parrots in the same genus, in flight shows a red patch on the flight feathers.
Their raucous calls, a series of harsh squawks and screeches, often betray their presence before they are visually confirmed. During the day, they may be observed perched in the canopy, often partially obscured by foliage, where they forage for fruits, seeds, and nuts. These parrots exhibit a strong social structure, forming small flocks outside of the breeding season, and their interactions are characterized by vocalizations and physical displays. They are cavity nesters, utilizing natural hollows in large trees for raising their young, a behavior that makes them vulnerable to habitat loss and the removal of mature trees.
